Why Do Figure Skaters Turn Into Pumpkins at Age 13? PDF Print E-mail

Last night, I enjoyed watching the Juvenile Boys event at my local regional figure skating championship. The event was exciting since six out of the nine competitors qualified for the 2009 U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships. I thought about the Open Juvenile Boys event that took place during the same competition. In figure skating, "Open" translates to "Too Old." Open events don't advance to Junior Nationals. Why? Just because... There is one talented boy competing in the Open Juvenile event who turned thirteen years old only one day before the September 1st entry cut-off date. He can do a great double Lutz and loves to skate. It's sad that because he was born just one day too early, that he can't compete in a qualifying event. Why did he turn into a pumpkin at thirteen?
