EVERETT, Wash. – Snohomish County was hoping for a big economic boost last weekend when Skate America – the premier international figure skating competition held in the U.S. – came to Everett.

If ticket sales are an indicator, the county got what it wanted.

Ticket sales at Comcast Arena reached 29,477, setting a new record for the event. It surpassed the 2002 total of 28,664 set in Spokane.

Approximately 25,000 tickets had been sold in advance of the three day event, but there were plenty of walk-up sales for the ladies free skate and the Skating Spectacular.

"The Pacific Northwest has always been welcoming of our events and the athletes, and Everett was no exception," said Ron Hershberger, president of U.S. Figure Skating. "This certainly is a testament to how the community of Everett has embraced this event,"

Skate America came at a time when the county is talking about possible layoffs due to the struggling economy.
