One of the greatest players in the history of Polish ice hockey, Mariusz Czerkawski, has decided to retire. The 36-year-old Czerkawski played in the NHL for over a dozen years. He started in the Boston Bruins in 1994 and played also for the Edmonton Oilers, the New York Islanders, the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs. In total, he played in 745 NHL matches, scored 215 goals and assisted 220. In 2000, he took part in a dream team NHL match in Toronto. He also played 42 times for the Polish national ice hockey team and scored 24 goals. Czerkawski played the last two seasons for the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers from Switzerland.
