PHILIP Joshua Endrinal from SM Megamall grabbed the top spot in the Basic Male category with a total of 19 points to lead the winners of the Skate Manila 2008 at the SM Mall of Asia International Skating Rink. A total of 243 Filipino participants, together with five Malaysian skaters and one from Taipei joined, vying for the gold in their respective categories. A spectacle of flips, toe loops and high, powerful jumps were flaunted in front of the roaring audience. And four of the most amazing skaters snatched the gold, led by Endrinal. In the Basic Female category, 7-year-old Renella Marie Wagan won first place with 48.38 points. She was also commended for having joined a total of 12 events in the same competition. Stephanie Weingartner, 19, also acclaimed for enlisting in the most number of events (13), succeeded in getting the first place in the High Female category with 47.74 points. Scoring 31.50 points, 10-year-old Jules Vince Alpe, won first prize in the High Male category. Special medals were also handed to Estefani Marie Guerra for giving the Most Artistic Performance, while the Most Promising Skater award went to Lara Beatrice Gilua. All the winners are from the SM Ice Skating Team and were all trained under the world-class standards of the SM Ice Skating Rinks. The awards they garnered are only additions to their already long list of accomplishments as skaters. Skate Manila is an annual program by the Ice Skating Institute Asia and is only one of the many competitions organized locally by the SM Ice Skating Rinks. Since its launch in 2004, Skate Manila has seen numerous talented skaters take over the rink and the world as well. Skate Manila cultivates the skills of Filipino ice skaters, while preparing them for competitions in the international arena to make the global lineup of skating professionals take notice of the Filipino talent in the sport.
